Reaping the rewards

Lynsay Hamilton, Legacy 2014 Rewards winner

Young Scot Legacy 2014 Rewards are connecting young people with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Lynsay Hamilton, Legacy 2014 Rewards winner had the opportunity to work shadow the Glasgow 2014 marketing and events team at the 100 days to go milestone.

The countdown to the commonwealth games is well and truly underway with less than 100 days to go until the opening ceremony. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the ‘100 Days to Go’ event on April 14th held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, for the reveal of the medals. This was the final large landmark event before the games and as an events management student myself it was wonderful to gain experience backstage in the set up and running of a full-scale event.

I gained this opportunity through The Young Scot Rewards scheme, which I think is such a great technique in order to have the young people of today have their opinion through short activities, which will gain points in order to apply for experiences and prizes. To be eligible for this reward I had to complete a couple of Legacy 2014 activities these included- registering for Event Team Scotland and Making a Pledge to Get Active!

The reward itself consisted of a two-day experience, where I met some amazing people who work and volunteer on behalf of Glasgow 2014. Day one I met with my contact for the reward who was an amazing help and taught me so much, she gave me a quick chat about the event before we headed over to the venue to meet the rest of the team. The pre- event meeting allowed us to see how the event was going to run and gave us a heads up on the following day.

On day two, we met at the Kelvingrove Art Museum and received a full briefing from the events manager who informed us what was to be expected of us at the event. Before the event went live the team were allowed to view the show of a live orchestra, aerobatic dancers and most importantly of all- the medal reveal. My role on the night was to assist with check-in and usher the guests to their seats, a large number of guests were invited along with VIP’s and the media.

commonwealth games 2014 medalsAfter my duties were complete it was an honor having the chance to see the medals up close and to have my picture taken with one. They are so wonderful and I am very pleased to have been a part of such a remarkable event for Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Thank you so much for the opportunity Young Scot and Glasgow 2014!!
